Where could I find game-ready textures I can use in commercial projects?

Does anyone know of any places where I could find game-ready-textures that I can use in a commercial project?

For years, I've seen people share textures for use in popular games for mods. But these are seldom ones that a person could legally use in a commercial project. I'd really like to find someone distributing texture packs like I have seen for classic shooters, but that could be used commercially.

I've seen sites with free-to-use textures that high-res photographs for making textures, but I'm looking for ones that are already "made," that tile and can just be plugged right into a game (possibly after a quick format change.)

The closest I have ever seen is OpenGameArt.org, which is a good site, but seldom has textures of any respectable quality. I have come across some good stuff for sale on Turbosquid as well, but their focus is on 3D models and as such their collection of textures is usually not what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have any good links to that sort of thing?

http://www.textures.com/ is a good site

@[member='VildNinja'], This is a fairly good site.

However, most commercial projects have an artist that turns them out. It helps to prevent people from screaming about things being an "Asset Flip" a relatively new buzz word for games that use off the shelf items or textures.

@[member='Navyman'], That is true, but I don't think this is caused by borrowed textures mostly, only in the cases where people are combining two textures without ensuring they fit together, or copying most of the content from another project.

One of my previous games actually uses A LOT of textures from that site, where the artist would create most assets in in a patchwork style + a lot of Photoshop on top. This was super helpful, since our artist was not great at creating textures from scratch, but she was still able to maintain most parts of the graphics production. Only exception was rigging and animation were we had to hire additional people.

While the game was not a huge economic success, nobody mentioned the asset flipping :) To be fair our game was 2D with a visual style made to look like DIY / raw and rusty, so I guess it depends on the project.

I think most of the negative vibes comes from people overusing the Unity asset store + releasing stock projects with only few modifications. As long as single textures don't stand out, I honestly don't think people will notice (in most cases at least). personally I instantly notice if rocks don't blend in with the background, but not if the textures are original or not.

If you are using PBR rendering(and less so, but still somewhat if you aren't), GameTextures.com is a good place to find many textures. It is paid though, but the textures all tile and are quite ready for game use.

Hmmm, that site looks familiar... Oh, it says "Formerly CGTextures." Yeah, I've been to that site before. It looks like they have improved a lot since I was last there, and now they offer a lot of seamless textures.

This is a great resource, but I was also hoping for something else. Everything on that site is made from photographs. And that's useful, sure, but I'm hoping to find a place where I can also get textures with more... character.

For example, here's a page with a bunch of textures to plug into classic Doom mods. Now half of them are just ripped from other games, I know. But even so there is a wide variety of styles and themes, and they tend to be more interesting than a simple bland surface. I can do a lot more with these without needing the artistic skill to modify the texture to match a given theme or even mix several textures into a more complex surface if that's what I needed. (Of course, even if they were ones I could use in a commercial project, they are all limited to projects that work with really low-resolution textures for flat surfaces. But that's beside the point.)

I'd love some links to collections with textures of that sort of caliber, and if possible, even more variety. Perhaps I may want to pursue a more cartoonish style, and I might want some textures that look like they were drawn or inked or hand-painted.

@kburkhart84 YES! That site looks amazing!
It's pretty close to what I was looking for. Thank you! If anyone else has any other links, I'd love to see them!
