Building some flight control hardware for PC

Building USB device won't be that expensive. I built recently my own gamepad just for fun. Nothing fancy but it worked. Total cost was about $20. I used software USB controller from here which saved a lot of money and is really easy to use. Total price of electronic parts was about $10 but I also needed to buy ISP programmer and soldering iron. It's not that diffucult either, you just need to have basic understanding of electronics.
