DirectX and garbbled window

I've just tried to implement the first DirectX 7 Direct3Dim tutorial as a simple MFC program, and I'm stumped by this bug. While I have reproduced the code from the triangle tutorial faithfully, when I run my program, I just get garbage in the window. The problem seems to be happening when I create the backbuffer. I've compiled the actual triangle tutorial, and it works fine, so my configuration is okay. If anyone has any ideas what might be causing this, I'd appreciate it. I can also send my code to someone if they were willing to take a look at it (it's not very long).

Thanks.
