Experience with Online Sales

In the near future, I''m hoping to set up a sales website for a gaming tool that I''m currently working on. Since I''m looking to make this as professional as possible, I''d like to include credit card sales. Ideally I''d like to have a setup like www.getsoftware.com has (they don''t accept new members anymore), where the credit card is confirmed on the merchant site, and then the customer auto-downloads the software. Does anyone here have any experience with this, with recommendations for companies to use (or avoid)? I''ve checked out store.yahoo.com, amazon zShops, and Verisign payflow, but they all seem to be a bit more high-end then I''m currently looking for. Thanks!

I use www.swreg.org - they are almost always the cheapest. There''s a link on their site which goes to an independent chart of different reg services (yes, it''s REALLY independent! They just link to it because they actually have the lowest prices for most price ranges), so even if you don''t want SWREG, I''d recommend you go there to find that chart, as I don''t recall the URL for it. SWREG does support the download thing. Not automatic, I believe, but I think they create an URL (you specify how long it''s valid for, and how many retries it allows) and email it to the customer. Something like that.
Thanks for the info. That comparison site is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I spent 2 hours this morning looking for a page like that, and even Google searches turned up nothing.

As for SWReg, I''ll definitely check them out. If they provide what you said, then that may be even better than what I was thinking of.

Augh. Danger Will Robinson, DANGER! I''ve heard horror stories about credit card billing for an indie software designer. I''d shop it to a publisher. They''ll take care of it for you. I''ve heard very good things about a company called Spiderweb Software (www.spidweb.com). Take a look there. And no, I''ve never sold a game to them, and I''m not paid by them.

Umh... then again we´ve all heard publisher horror stories. If you think you can do this on your own then do it. With a publisher you are (probably) more likely to sell more units of whatever you have (assuming that you find one willing to publish you), with you getting less money per item sold.
And you can get ripped off anywhere... just be careful.
ok, enough paranoia, best of luck selling your tool
"publisher horror stories"???

Nah! I don't believe you.

Umm...did I say "publisher horror stories?" No. I said "credit card billing for an indie software designer." I said it would be BETTER to shop it to a publisher. So Nicole, Hase - read the post next time, please.

Btw: What happened to your site Nicole?
the message board? it got erased, obvioulsy someone complained and threated with lawsuits and the people at beseen.com who hosted the board just erased it.
Mr Ropple

Just to clarify things:

No you didn´t say "publisher horror stories". I did. And it was intended as is. So, no misunderstanding on my part. If you care to (re-?)read my post you may find that it makes perfect sense. I just intended to point out that you can get ripped off either way.
