I am using VS Express Edition... I followed all the steps to setup the Platform SDK for windows 2003 r2 but when i press F5 to debug and run it gives me the following error: ------ Build started: Project: test, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------ Linking... test.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol @_RTC_CheckStackVars@8 referenced in function _wWinMain@16 test.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol __RTC_CheckEsp referenced in function _wWinMain@16 test.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol __RTC_Shutdown test.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol __RTC_InitBase test.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol ___security_cookie referenced in function "long __stdcall WndProc(struct HWND__ *,unsigned int,unsigned int,long)" (?WndProc@@YGJPAUHWND__@@IIJ@Z) test.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol @__security_check_cookie@4 referenced in function "long __stdcall WndProc(struct HWND__ *,unsigned int,unsigned int,long)" (?WndProc@@YGJPAUHWND__@@IIJ@Z) LINK : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _wWinMainCRTStartup C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\test\Debug\test.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 7 unresolved externals Build log was saved at "file://c:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\test\test\Debug\BuildLog.htm" test - 8 error(s), 0 warning(s) ========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ========== Can someone please tell me how to fix this ? -FasT

One thing to try: go to Configuration Properties -> C/C++ -> Code Generation and set Buffer Security Check to No.
well that did help but not much inly 2 errors were fixed and for the rest its like this:

------ Build started: Project: test, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------
Compiling...
stdafx.cpp
Compiling...
test.cpp
Linking...
test.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol @_RTC_CheckStackVars@8 referenced in function _wWinMain@16
test.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol __RTC_CheckEsp referenced in function _wWinMain@16
test.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol __RTC_Shutdown
test.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol __RTC_InitBase
LINK : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _wWinMainCRTStartup
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\test\Debug\test.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 5 unresolved externals
Build log was saved at "file://c:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\test\test\Debug\BuildLog.htm"
test - 6 error(s), 0 warning(s)
========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ==========
Same property page: try changing Basic Runtime Checks to No.
I have no such selection as "no" so i tryed the Default and then i get only 2 errors ( it keeps getting better )

this is what i get now:

------ Build started: Project: test, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------
Linking...
LINK : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _wWinMainCRTStartup
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\test\Debug\test.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals
Build log was saved at "file://c:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\test\test\Debug\BuildLog.htm"
test - 2 error(s), 0 warning(s)
========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ==========
(edit: err, I think I had that the wrong way around)

That sounds like you need to set your application as a Console application:
"Project->Properties->Configuration Properties->Linker->System->Subsystem" and set that to "Console".
setting it to console gives this error:

------ Build started: Project: test, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------
Linking...
LINK : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _mainCRTStartup
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\test\Debug\test.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals
Build log was saved at "file://c:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\test\test\Debug\BuildLog.htm"
test - 2 error(s), 0 warning(s)
========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ==========

i have no clue what to do... sofar i understand from all these error messages is that there could be something wrong with the CRT folders fails... ( sorry if im wrong and it sounded silly ... im just new to VS)
Do you have a main() or WinMain() function at all?
its a new windows aplication file ( following the Platform SDK instalation)
it said to make one and just run it to ess if it works

CODE:

// test.cpp : Defines the entry point for the application.
//

#include "stdafx.h"
#include "test.h"

#define MAX_LOADSTRING 100

// Global Variables:
HINSTANCE hInst; // current instance
TCHAR szTitle[MAX_LOADSTRING]; // The title bar text
TCHAR szWindowClass[MAX_LOADSTRING]; // the main window class name

// Forward declarations of functions included in this code module:
ATOM MyRegisterClass(HINSTANCE hInstance);
BOOL InitInstance(HINSTANCE, int);
LRESULT CALLBACK WndProc(HWND, UINT, WPARAM, LPARAM);
INT_PTR CALLBACK About(HWND, UINT, WPARAM, LPARAM);

int APIENTRY _tWinMain(HINSTANCE hInstance,

Hmm, so that should be Windows subsystem. Just to be sure, you did follow all the instructions on this page, correct?
